Home Improvements That Matter Most

We can help with the things that matter most. Safety, Comfort, and being able to feel confident in your own home. Our trained staff can help assess what your home needs the most for your safety. We know what is eligible for the grants and what is not.

Am I eligible for help to pay for renovating my home?

You are eligible to apply if:

  • you are a PEI resident (have a PEI Health Card) and a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident;

  • your combined income* is $50,000 or less;

  • the property is your principle residence and you currently reside in the home;

  • you are an owner of the property or have a life interest in the property; (Family can own or have life interest in the property for Seniors Safe @ Home Program)

  • your property value is $300,000 or less; (*Property value does not apply to Seniors Safe @ Home Program)

  • you have not met the maximum grant through previous applications to the PEI Home Renovation Programs.

* Combined Income is used to determine maximum grant amount available to applicant, and considers income of ALL residents over the age of 18 years old, living in the home.

PEI Home Renovation Programs

The PEI Home Renovation Programs can provide financial assistance to home owners through three renovation programs. One application can be submitted to assess your eligibility for the PEI Home Renovation Program, Seniors Home Repair Program, and the Seniors Safe @ Home Program.

Seniors Home Repair Program

If you are 60 years of age or older and you apply to the PEI Home Renovation Programs, you will automatically be assessed for the Seniors Home Repair Program to help with the cost of repairs to your home. You could receive up to a maximum of $4,000 in assistance for eligible repairs such as repairs to a roof, windows, doors, or a furnace.

Seniors Safe @ Home Program

If you are 60 years of age or older and you apply to the PEI Home Renovation Programs, you will be automatically assessed for the Seniors Safe @ Home Program. You may be eligible for the Seniors Safe @ Home Program if you need to make changes to your home in order to improve its accessibility to continue living there. You could receive up to $10,000 in assistance to help with the cost of the renovations. This funding is based on the senior applicant’s income or the seniors’ combined income (if living with a spouse or partner). Income of other household members is not considered with this program only.

The modifications must be necessary for your accessibility, health, and safety. Modifications must relate to the senior applicant’s loss of ability and must provide improved access or increased physical safety to the home. Portable devices are not eligible.

How does the program work?

Once your application is received, it goes through an intake process to determine that it meets all program criteria & eligibility. We then follow up with a letter to confirm your status and the next steps in the process.

  • To obtain final approval for funding, submit 2 competitive quotes for review within 90 days of receiving your letter. If more time is needed to secure quotes, you must contact our office to request an extension.

  • Supporting documents may be included with the letter to assist you with getting proper, detailed quotes.

  • The quotes will be reviewed and details verified for eligible renovation requests.

  • An approval letter stating the grant amount that will be funded by the PEIHRP programs, will be mailed to you.

  • You will have a period of 6 months from the approval letter date to complete the approved work, with an option to request an extension, if required. Failure to complete the work or contact our office for an extension will result in an automatic closing of your file.

  • Your application will remain active for a maximum period of one year from the date our office receives it.

  • If for any reason you fail to complete the approved renovations within that time, your file will be closed, and you will need to re-apply and be assessed again for funding eligibility

  • Payments for approved work are completed once invoices and Request for Payment (required) and Payee forms (if applicable) are provided to our office.

  • Pre and Post-inspections by qualified staff may be necessary to ensure compliance with building codes and industry standards prior to payment being released.

  • Once the maximum grant is received, you are not eligible for another grant for 15 years.
